Belgium persues their Target

The second game of the day was between Belgium and Malaysia. After carefully getting the feel of the game, Belgium were able to gain the upper hand and took a well-earned lead. Malaysia were not able to take advantage of some good chances.

The game began very slowly and there was hardly any action within the circle. Both teams stayed in the middle of the field and waited patiently. Maurice Dubois' green card for a foul in the 14th minute was the only action worth mentioning before the middle of the first half. Then it was also Dubois who, with a flat shot, could achieve a score of 1:0 from the first Belgian short corner from the left. The goal inspired the Belgian team, who then had more of the play. There was a chance in 27th minute to take the lead, when Laddyn received a dream pass from Vandermissen, which he hit over the bar with a tomahawk backhand shot. Just before the halftime siren, the Malaysian defence could only stop the Belgian attack with a foul. The resultant short corner achieved nothing, and Belgium left the field at half time with a 1:0 lead.

Malaysia immediately began the second half more positively and attacked behind the 25 yard line. But there was still no play within the circle. There were very few concerted attacks. The Belgian players started to celebrate after an attack in the 50th minute, when the ball landed in the net after a free hit. But a Malayan player had touched it, so there was only a long corner. Ten minutes before the end Malaysia pushed for a draw, but were unable to gain any advantage from their attacking moves. A short corner two minutes before the end was flicked by Adabi on the right past the goal.

The Belgian trainer Marcelo Orlando felt his team was very well prepared tactically for this game. This victory allowed them to get closer to their aim of achieving the second place in their group.

Tai Beng Hai, the Malaysian trainer, several times expected to hear the whistle blow for a corner. But his team is here to learn. He said that many people in Malaysia would be following with interest the progress of his junior team in this tournament,
