Spanien - Indien 2:1 (1:1, 1:1)

Sunday, 12.08.2007 - 13:00 in Mönchengladbach

Spain wins bronze thanks to a Golden Goal

In the battle for the third place between Spain and India, it was obvious that both teams wanted to get on the podium. It developed into a fast, open game, which Spain won after extra time to earn themselves the third place in the tournament. Both teams showed the effects of having played five games in six days, but Spain had a slight advantage in possession and goal opportunities.

Spain had a better start and more possession. India only got into the Spanish circle after ten minutes’ play and afterwards played more openly. Good opportunities remained few and far between. In the 28th minutes India was awarded its first short corner. Ram accepted the challenge and, with a flat shot, scored the conversion putting India into the lead. Spain answered immediately and equalised after less than thre

In the second half the pace of the game quickened, with Spain having slight superiority. Both sides had some good chances. After 15 minutes there was frantic activity, with both teams pressing for the lead. India dropped to ten men after a yellow card in the 54th minute and were hardly able to cross the centre line. After this phase, both teams only had a few chances, which they were not able to utilise.

So the game had to be decided by extra time or a penalty shoot-out. Spain had the better start and won two potentially dangerous chances. India stood their ground and also had opportunities to score. Seconds before the first half of extra time, Spain was awarded another short corner. The scorer of the equaliser stepped forward and flicked the ball to the right just under the bar, giving the keeper no chance of saving it. This action assured Spain of winning the bronze medal, thanks to the golden goal rule.

Looking at the game as a whole, Salvador Indurain, the Spanish coach, felt that his team had played better and were worthy winners. The Indian coach A.K. Bansal said that his team had not been able to play in the way they had intended. But his players are still young, have not trained together for very long, and he hopes they will be more cohesive in the future.
