England - Germany 3:6 (1:2)

Sunday, 12.08.2007 - 11:00 in Mönchengladbach

Saying goodbye with an impressive victory

The German team very much wanted to say farewell with a victory in their last game of the tournament. They managed to do that most impressively. Apart from short weaker phases before and shortly after half time, which England were able to turn to their advantage, Germany dominated the play and earned more and more chances. All in all, a well-deserved victory, which gained the German team fifth place in the DKV Junior Trophy competition.

Germany started the game well and took the lead in the second minute with a goal from Martin Zwicker. England couldn’t shake themselves free, because the German team pursued them relentlessly. The German team was then rewarded in the 11th minute with a second goal, scored by Tim Blasberg-Roelen. England became stronger halfway through the first half and with two short corners had some chances, which however were rendered harmless with spectacular saves by Nicolas Jacobi. Three minutes before half time, England got the upper hand and the frequency of the German loss of possession was punished with a goal from David Condon. The score at half time was England 1, Germany 2.

England started noticeably more aggressive and after just one minute Peter Dobson used a short corner to bring the score to 2:2. But Germany had the answer to hand, and regained the lead after a short corner with a goal from Robin Joseph. Germany took control of the game again and were successful in the 47th minute after yet another corner converted by Thilo Stralkowski. Afterwards England hardly left their own half and were hemmed in by Germany. In this phase, the Germans made better use of the pitch and were passing the ball easily among themselves. The German superiority resulted in Maximilian Wüterich’s goal in the 64th minute and Tim Blasberg-Roelen’s goal a minute later. One minute before the end, James Osborne was able to make the result look better, bringing the final score to 3:6.

The German trainer Ulrich Forstner was especially satisfied with their successful corner play today. His team’s early lead had also given them the necessary self-confidence. Bobby Crutchley, the England trainer, thought the key to the loss of the game was the greater experience of the German team. His young team could not withstand the pressure and conceded too many goals. He explained that his team had had to adapt to the last-minute introduction of three young players due to injury to experienced team members. But he was grateful for the opportunity to take part and gain experience in this tournament.
