Poland collects the extra point after a penalty shoot-out

The final day of the tournament began with a game between Malaysia and Poland. Particularly during the first half the game was a little lacking in pace and was marked by inaccurate passes on both sides. The second half was not a lot better, although two goals were scored. Because the tournament regulations do not allow for a draw, there had to be a penalty shoot-out. Poland were the luckier team and earned the bonus point. It was altogether a rather weak game, which Malaysia could have won if they had had a little more luck and not played so passively towards the close of the second half.

As is was still early in the morning, both games began cautiously and there were few chances at goal. By the middle of the first half, both teams were at least able to create a few chances in the circle.

It was noticeable in the beginning of the second half that both teams had decided to work harder. But there was no flood of goal chances. Malaysia had the best chance in the 47th minute when the ball suddenly came to Adabi, nine metres in front of the goal, who made a direct shot which was a close miss. Then in the 56th minute, it was suddenly 1:0 for Malaysia. Sarjab Singh, standing half left of the circle, received the ball and, with a firm shot into the right hand corner, won the lead for Malaysia. Although Poland was able to create a good chance immediately afterwards, they weren’t dangerous enough and didn’t give the impression that they really wanted to win the game. But Malaysia remained too passive and Poland then had more possession and four minutes before the end, thanks to a short corner, were able to score the equaliser. The regulation game time ended with 1:1, resulting in a penalty shoot-out, which Poland won, scoring four to Malaysia’s two.

The Malaysia trainer Tai Beng Hai confirmed that his young team would have to learn to defend a lead under pressure. In general they had gained great experience during the tournament. Beng Hai could not praise the organisation of the tournament highly enough. He hopes that this kind of tournament will become a regular event in the future. The Polish trainer, Krysztof Witczak, thought it important that his team got their first points and were able to end the tournament on a positive note.
