Just as in the Belgium - England game, only the winner would qualify for the semi-final. The Netherlands began strongly and were able to take the lead in just the fourth minute with a goal from Bas Campbell. Constantijn Jonker soon made it 2:0 and it looked as though the Netherlands had the field to themselves, but Malaysia soon made their presence felt, Ahmad Kazamirul Nasruddin scoring from a corner. And although the Netherlands were able to increase their lead to 3:1 just before half time, the plucky Malaysians didn't lose heart.

Surprisingly, after half time coach Tai Beng Hai substituted the regular goalkeeper Mohd Fairos Md Wanazir, in order to give the second keeper Hakim Adnan game practice. He was immediately caught napping and within a few minutes was beaten by the Dutch fireworks. The final score of 8:2 didn't truly reflect the run of most of the game. By the end, the experience of the Dutch showed through and the Malaysians countered with all the skill at their disposal. Coach Michel van den Heuvel agreed. His team began well, had a few problems later, but towards the end the game drew to its inevitable conclusion.

Malaysia's Beng Hai repeated how difficult the group had been, but was happy that his team had been able to gather valuable experience here. Malaysia is now third in their group and will meet Poland tomorrow. The Netherlands will know who their opponents will be after the result of the game between Germany and India is known.
