Poland - Spain 3:7 (0:2)

Wednesday, 10.08.2007 - 15:30 in Mönchengladbach

Spain reaches the semi-finals

It was quite clear where both teams stood. With two lost games, Poland already knew that they hadn’t yet qualified for the semi-final, whereas Spain would definitely qualify if they won today. So the Spanish applied pressure from the start and took the lead after just four minutes. Franc Dinares fought for the ball and played it to the mercurial Pedro Tome, who took it on the run. Tome drew Poland’s keeper Stefan Maciol to the left and passed to Ignasi Guerrero, who finished the manoeuvre with a 0:1 score. The shot that should have been the opportunity for Szymon Odszyjczyk to equalise went over the crossbar.
As the game became less volatile, Pedro Tome scored for 0:2.

The game seemed to be really in the bag when, shortly after the start of the second half, Ignasi Guerrero scored for 0:3. Even Poland’s goal, temporarily raising the score to 1:4, didn’t really alter anything. Spain could have been even further in the lead, but made the mistake of wishing to score more spectacularly than necessary.
Within two minutes, Poland’s Piotr Kozlowski shortened the lead to 3:5, but even that didn’t impress the Spaniards. Instead, Guillermo Garcis and Gabriel Dabanch ensured a final score of 3:7.

There was a surprise in the game when, in the last few minutes, the regular Spanish goalkeeper Francesc Mata was substituted for Alejandra Adiego, who did a good, reliable job in his first tournament game.

Poland’s trainer Krysztof Witczak was of course disappointed with his team’s last place in their group, but emphasised how young his team is and that their main aim was to gain experience. The Spanish coach Salvador Indurain has achieved his pre-tournament goal by reaching the semi-finals, and now waits to see who his opponents will be.
