The first game of the tournament resulted in a narrow win for the Malaysian team: England 1 : Malaysia 2.
The Malaysians began strongly in the first phase of the match, which was marked by intermittent rainfall.
Although the English team became increasingly more confident, the Malaysians were able to celebrate their first goal after only nine minutes. After a short corner N. Mohd Noor took a deflected ball out of the air and shot it into the English goal.

After this success, the Malaysians continued their dominance, adding another goal in the 13th minute when M. Abd Rahim won possession of the ball and passed it to M. Adnan, who scored the goal: England 0 : Malaysia 2.
The English team then began to shake off the pressure of the Malaysians and started to play more confidently.
A. Nassruddin just managed to stop R. Smith's flick with his body on the line , giving the English a penalty stroke which A. Dixon hit shoulder-high into the left side of the Malaysian goal. England 1 : Malaysia 2.
The performance of the English side continued to improve, resulting in a further corner which, however, did not lead to a further goal. The first half ended with the score remaining 1:2.

At the beginning of the second half the English players had several more good chances, but the following corners produced no additional goals. Malaysia played very defensively in the second half with only a few-- fruitless--counterattacks.
England's weakness in penalty corners prevented them from overcoming the Malaysians' early lead, which they were able to defend to the end of the game. The key to the Malaysians' narrow victory was their strong defense in these penalty scenes.

The English coach, although disappointed that his players had lacked the necessary luck in front of the opponents' goal, was satisfied with the general standard of play shown by his team.
